The user pricks their finger, a drop of blood is placed onto a test strip which has been inserted into the Glucometer, the Meter detects the level of sugar in the blood within a few seconds and displays this as a number. This is your blood sugar level.
In simple terms the blood sugar level calculated is based on the chemical reaction of the sugar in the blood to the substance on the test strip, which measures the amount of glucose in the blood.
The blood sugar result displayed is either in mmol/L (millimoles per liter) or mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). A reading of 5.6 mmo/L equates to 100.8 mg/dL. Click here for a list of countries and the Unit of Measurement for Blood Sugar.
Today’s Glucometers are far superior to those of a few years ago. They can range from basic devices that simply calculate your blood sugar reading and the user notes down the details in a journal or enters into a spreadsheet or similar. Or they can connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth and store all of the data, as well allowing you to enter meal and snack details. There also Blood Sugar Monitors that connect directly to a Smartphone to manage and store the readings.
